Worked example: a $45.00 Whatnot sale

Suppose you sell an item for $45.00 and charge $8.00 shipping. The gross sale is $53.00. Here is how Whatnot arrives at what you keep:

  • Commission fee (8% × $45.00)$3.60
  • Payment processing (2.9% × $53.00 + $0.30)$1.84

Total fees come to $5.44 (10.3% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $47.56. After your $14.00 item cost and $6.00 shipping paid, the profit is $27.56 — a 61.2% margin on the item price.

These models use a common item price with no shipping, ads, item cost, or cross-border surcharge. Each product keeps its own default sale type, category, plan, and payment method, so the table compares modeled seller deductions — not equivalent services or total buyer cost. Whatnot’s modeled deduction is $5.21 (11.6%).

How Whatnot fees work

For most US categories, Whatnot charges an 8% commission on the final item price. It separately charges payment processing of 2.9% of the total order value plus $0.30 per transaction. The official processing basis can include buyer-paid shipping and tax; this calculator includes item price and buyer-paid shipping but has no buyer-tax input, so the live deduction may be slightly higher. Coins, pallets, some high-value orders, promotions, and eligible seller programs can use different commission rates.
