Shopify fee calculator

Shopify is your own storefront, so there is no marketplace commission — you pay Shopify Payments processing of 2.9% + $0.30 on the Basic plan (lower on higher tiers) plus a monthly subscription. If you use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, an extra transaction fee of 0.5%–2% applies. Enter your order value to see the processing fee, the net you keep, and your profit after product and shipping costs.

Worked example: a $55.00 Shopify sale

Suppose you sell an item for $55.00 and charge $7.00 shipping. The gross sale is $62.00. Here is how Shopify arrives at what you keep:

  • Payment processing (2.9% × $62.00 + $0.30)$2.10

Total fees come to $2.10 (3.4% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $59.90. After your $16.00 item cost and $6.00 shipping paid, the profit is $37.90 — a 68.9% margin on the item price.

How Shopify fees work

Shopify is an ecommerce platform, not a marketplace, so it never takes a cut of each sale as commission. Your costs are a monthly subscription (Basic, Shopify, or Advanced) plus payment processing. With Shopify Payments, online card rates run from 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic down to about 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced, and in-person rates are lower still. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2% (Basic), 1% (Shopify), or 0.5% (Advanced) on top of whatever your gateway charges. Apps, themes, and advertising are separate optional costs.

Frequently asked questions

What does Shopify charge per sale?
With Shopify Payments there is no per-sale commission — you pay card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 on the Basic plan (lower on higher tiers). Your other fixed cost is the monthly subscription.
What is the extra transaction fee?
If you use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on the Shopify plan, or 0.5% on Advanced, on top of your gateway's own charges.
How much is the Shopify monthly subscription?
Shopify bills a fixed monthly fee that rises by tier (Basic, Shopify, Advanced). The subscription is independent of your sales volume, so it matters most when you are just starting out.
Does Shopify charge for in-person sales?
Yes, but at a lower rate. Shopify Payments in-person (POS) card rates are cheaper than online rates and typically have no fixed per-transaction charge.
