Worked example: a $35.00 Square sale

Suppose you sell an item for $35.00 with no shipping charge. The gross sale is $35.00. Here is how Square arrives at what you keep:

  • Payment processing (2.6% × $35.00 + $0.15)$1.06

Total fees come to $1.06 (3.0% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $33.94. After your $10.00 item cost, the profit is $23.94 — a 68.4% margin on the item price.

These models use a common item price with no shipping, ads, item cost, or cross-border surcharge. Each product keeps its own default sale type, category, plan, and payment method, so the table compares modeled seller deductions — not equivalent services or total buyer cost. Square’s modeled deduction is $1.06 (3.0%).

Frequently asked questions

What does Square charge per transaction?
Square Free charges 2.6% + $0.15 for in-person card payments, 3.3% + $0.30 online or by invoice, and 3.5% + $0.15 for manual entry or card-on-file payments. Paid plans and API rates can differ.
Why does Square charge more for online sales?
Card-not-present transactions carry a higher risk of fraud and chargebacks, so Square (like most processors) charges a higher rate for online and keyed-in payments than for in-person taps and dips.
Does Square charge a monthly fee?
No. The standard Square account is free month to month; you only pay the per-transaction rate when you take a payment. Optional add-ons like Payroll cost extra.
Does Square add fees for international cards?
Yes. Square currently adds 1.5% for a card issued outside the seller's home country. Currency conversion can add separate costs.
