Square fee calculator

Square charges a flat processing rate with no monthly fee: 2.6% + $0.10 for in-person card payments and 2.9% + $0.30 for online or keyed-in sales. Like Stripe, Square is a payment processor rather than a marketplace, so there is no listing or final value fee. Enter your sale amount to see the processing fee, the net deposited to your account, and your profit after costs.

Worked example: a $35.00 Square sale

Suppose you sell an item for $35.00 with no shipping charge. The gross sale is $35.00. Here is how Square arrives at what you keep:

  • Payment processing (2.6% × $35.00 + $0.10)$1.01

Total fees come to $1.01 (2.9% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $33.99. After your $10.00 item cost, the profit is $23.99 — a 68.5% margin on the item price.

How Square fees work

Square's pricing is a flat rate per transaction with no monthly commitment. In-person card payments cost 2.6% + $0.10, while online, invoiced, or manually keyed sales cost more because they carry higher fraud risk — typically 2.9% + $0.30 online. International cards and currency conversion add a surcharge. Square offers custom pricing for high-volume sellers, and its separate tools (Payroll, Marketing) carry their own fees, but the core payment processing is just the per-transaction rate.

Frequently asked questions

What does Square charge per transaction?
Square charges 2.6% + $0.10 for in-person card payments and 2.9% + $0.30 for online or keyed-in sales. There is no monthly fee for the standard account.
Why does Square charge more for online sales?
Card-not-present transactions carry a higher risk of fraud and chargebacks, so Square (like most processors) charges a higher rate for online and keyed-in payments than for in-person taps and dips.
Does Square charge a monthly fee?
No. The standard Square account is free month to month; you only pay the per-transaction rate when you take a payment. Optional add-ons like Payroll cost extra.
Does Square add fees for international cards?
Yes. Payments made with a card issued outside your country add an international surcharge, and currency conversion adds a further spread.
