Worked example: a $42.00 Mercari sale
Suppose you sell an item for $42.00 and charge $7.00 shipping. The gross sale is $49.00. Here is how Mercari arrives at what you keep:
- Selling fee (10% × $49.00)−$4.90
Total fees come to $4.90 (10.0% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $44.10. After your $11.00 item cost and $6.00 shipping paid, the profit is $27.10 — a 64.5% margin on the item price.

How Mercari fees work
For new and updated US listings under Mercari's fee structure introduced in January 2025, sellers pay a flat 10% selling fee on the completed item price and buyer-paid shipping. Mercari states that no additional payment-processing fee applies to the seller. Buyers separately pay a Buyer Protection fee, which is not deducted from seller proceeds and is not modeled here.
