Worked example: a $50.00 eBay sale
Suppose you sell an item for $50.00 and charge $5.00 shipping. The gross sale is $55.00. Here is how eBay arrives at what you keep:
- Final value fee (13.6% × $55.00 + $0.40)−$7.88
Total fees come to $7.88 (14.3% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $47.12. After your $15.00 item cost and $4.00 shipping paid, the profit is $28.12 — a 56.2% margin on the item price.
How eBay fees work
eBay's final value fee is calculated on the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping and any handling charge, but not sales tax that eBay collects and remits. The rate is banded: for most categories, 13.6% applies to the portion of the sale up to $7,500 per item and 2.35% to the portion above it, so the effective rate drops on high-value sales. On top of the percentage, eBay adds a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 for orders over $10.00. Listing is free for the first 250 listings per month ($0.35 each after that); select Business & Industrial categories carry a $20 insertion fee instead. If you run Promoted Listings Standard, the ad rate you set is charged as a percentage of the item price only when the ad leads to a sale. Cross-border sales add a 1.65% international fee when the buyer's delivery or registration address is outside the US.

- Does eBay charge the final value fee on shipping?
- Yes. The final value fee applies to the full amount the buyer pays, including the shipping charge you set, so offering free shipping does not avoid the fee — it just moves the shipping into the item price.
- How does the $7,500 band work on expensive items?
- Only the portion of the sale above $7,500 is charged at the lower 2.35% rate. On a $10,000 sale in most categories you pay 13.6% of $7,500 ($1,020) plus 2.35% of $2,500 ($58.75), not 13.6% of the full amount.
- How do Promoted Listings fees work?
- With Promoted Listings Standard you choose an ad rate (a percentage of the item price). You only pay it when a buyer clicks your ad and buys within 30 days. The fee is calculated on the item price, not the shipping.
- Does a store subscription reduce fees?
- Store subscriptions mainly add free listings and tools; any final value rate reduction varies by category and subscription level, so confirm the current discount in your seller dashboard before relying on it. The tiers here are flagged 'check current rate' for that reason.
