Worked example: a $22.00 Facebook Marketplace sale
Suppose you sell an item for $22.00 and charge $6.00 shipping. The gross sale is $28.00. Here is how Facebook Marketplace arrives at what you keep:
- Selling fee (5% × $28.00 (min $0.40))−$1.40
Total fees come to $1.40 (5.0% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $26.60. After your $5.00 item cost and $5.00 shipping paid, the profit is $16.60 — a 75.5% margin on the item price.
How Facebook Marketplace fees work
Facebook Marketplace has two very different fee outcomes. Local sales arranged in person are completely free — there is no commission and no payment fee, because the exchange happens face to face. Shipped sales, where the buyer pays and the item is posted with a Marketplace shipping label, incur a selling fee of 5% of the total sale amount (item price plus shipping), with a minimum fee of $0.40. That fee includes payment processing. Charitable sales and some categories are exempt. Because local sales are free, the calculator is most useful for pricing items you intend to ship.
