Venmo charges a flat 1.9% + $0.10 on payments you receive for goods and services on a business profile — one of the lowest processing rates among peer-to-peer apps. Personal payments funded from a balance or bank are free but carry no seller protection and should not be used for sales. Worked example: a $30.00 Venmo sale

Suppose you sell an item for $30.00 with no shipping charge. The gross sale is $30.00. Here is how Venmo arrives at what you keep:

  • Payment processing (1.9% × $30.00 + $0.10)$0.67

Total fees come to $0.67 (2.2% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $29.33. After your $8.00 item cost, the profit is $21.33 — a 71.1% margin on the item price.

How Venmo fees work

Venmo's fee depends on how the payment is sent and received. Sellers using a Venmo business profile pay 1.9% + $0.10 on goods-and-services payments, which is lower than most marketplaces. Personal payments funded from a Venmo balance or linked bank account are free, but they offer no purchase or seller protection, so using them for sales leaves you exposed to disputes. A personal payment funded by a credit or debit card instead adds a fee of around 3% for the sender. Venmo is owned by PayPal, and its business rates mirror PayPal's discounted peer-to-peer pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What does Venmo charge to receive a business payment?
On a Venmo business profile, receiving a goods-and-services payment costs 1.9% of the amount plus a fixed $0.10 — one of the lowest rates among payment apps.
Are personal Venmo payments free?
Yes, when funded from a Venmo balance or linked bank account. But personal payments carry no seller protection, so they should not be used to sell goods.
Why shouldn't I sell using personal Venmo payments?
Personal payments offer no purchase or seller protection, so a buyer can dispute and reverse the payment with little recourse for you. Using them for sales also violates Venmo's terms.
Does Venmo charge for instant transfers?
Moving money from Venmo to your bank is free on a standard (1–3 day) transfer; an instant transfer to a debit card costs a small percentage of the amount.
