Worked example: a $60.00 Stripe sale
Suppose you sell an item for $60.00 with no shipping charge. The gross sale is $60.00. Here is how Stripe arrives at what you keep:
- Payment processing (2.9% × $60.00 + $0.30)−$2.04
Total fees come to $2.04 (3.4% of the gross sale), leaving a net payout of $57.96. After your $18.00 item cost, the profit is $39.96 — a 66.6% margin on the item price.
How Stripe fees work
Stripe is a payment processor, not a marketplace, so it only charges for moving money. The standard US rate is 2.9% + $0.30 per successful online card charge, dropping to 2.7% + $0.05 for in-person payments. International cards add roughly 1.5%, and converting to a different currency adds a further 1%. Failed charges and refunds are free, and there is no monthly or setup fee on the standard plan. High-volume businesses can negotiate custom rates.
